Features to Consider Before Buying

It’s vital that, when seeking to buy a knee brace for hiking, you know what to look for. There are millions of products out there, and it’s easier if you know what exactly you want in a given product.

To begin with, you should be specific and ask for one specifically meant for hiking. Do not get a generic brace that may end up not providing the required knee support on the trail. We will give you a comprehensive list of features that will ensure the knee brace you buy serves you well and remains durable for a long time.

Size

We have all bought a product that ended up not being the right size. It can be quite frustrating when this happens. When purchasing a knee brace, keep in mind that different manufacturers have different size guides. Therefore, you will need to fit before purchase to ensure it sits on your knees correctly.

Hiking in an ill-fitting knee brace can lead to discomfort and further health problems as it will definitely not give the knee protection you were looking for. If it is too tight, it limits blood flow to, and if it’s too loose, it pulls your knee ligaments and causes muscle damage. Is this what you would like to go through during a hike?

Comfort

Hiking can be quite tasking at times. You need a knee brace that will not only cushion you from injuries, but will also feel comfortable on your knees. It should be able to stay in place throughout your hike, which calls for adjustable straps that do not feel too tight on your knees.

The fabric should be able to absorb sweat to prevent the slippery feeling on the knees during the hike, which can be quite uncomfortable. You should also opt for a water-resistant knee brace that does not wet in rainy conditions or if you are on a damp trail.

Style

Understanding that knee braces come in various shapes and styles will go a long way in helping you choose the right fit. There is a slip on it that you wear by putting your foot through and sliding it up. Ideally, this is perfect for hiking since it provides an excellent grip and proper support to your knees.

Hiking-Knee-Pain-3-680x453

For a wraparound knee brace, you will place it on your knee and adjust with straps. It’s not ideal for hiking because when the straps are loose, they ceases to provide knee support leaving you prone to torn ligaments and muscle injuries.

Adjustability

Hiking involves trekking over long distances on different terrains. A hiking knee brace should, therefore, have well fitted adjustable straps that allow you either to loosen or tighten depending on the terrain you are hiking on. The straps should help align your muscular joints to your patella, which reduces any internal friction on your muscles. The knee brace should also be easy to get on and off.

Quality

You should never compromise on quality when it comes to products such as knee braces. The one you go for should be made of high-quality materials that will ensure it’s durable for a long time, whenever you need to go for a hike.

Opt for those made of soft and light material such as nylon or neoprene. The last thing you need is hiking in a knee brace that is heavy on your knees. Going for a lighter material ensures you do not feel any weight on your knees, which also keeps your muscles relaxed. This also helps you go about your duties without feeling uneasy.

Best Products on Today’s Market

After you know all the important features, it’s important for you to look at the best reviewed and rated knee braces in the market. That way you can compare and contrast them, in order to finally pick the one you really feel will suit you better. That’s why we came with such a list for you.

  • I came into this article thinking that knee braces are for the elderly, but I came out of this article already buying one, the Active Gear YVQU model. Has anyone tried it yet?
They just seem so great for those long distance hiking adventures. Is there a maximum time limit to wearing them? As I’m worried they might cause damage if I wear them for long periods of time.

  • That is a great knee brace to have! Yes, they are great for long distances, but if you are starting to worry or feel uncomfortable, you can always take it off for a while and give your knee more free range of motion. This is really up to where you are comfortable, as if you think it has been on too long, then you should take it off.

  • I am a person who is really interested in hiking. However, I am little too heavy and that caused me a lot of knee injuries. I am currently using one and I don’t think that is one of the best. I am going to order one today based on what I have read from this. Thank you so much.
